To increase safety…
by reducing the overall volume of cars (cut throughs to avoid light, U-turns due to a train, parking here to visit businesses etc.).
by reducing average speed of cars (visual reminders for everyone to slow down).
To enable an increased sense of community because…
when everyone slows down, it increases our opportunity for friendly interaction and community building. It’s easier for kids and pets to play in the front yard and for neighbors to stop and chat while on a walk.
it is easier and safer to get to the park which is one of our most fantastic shared resources.
it creates equity between neighbors who get around in different ways. Whether you are walking, on a bicycle, in a wheelchair, pushing a stroller, holding a leash, getting exercise or just running to catch the bus, reduced vehicular traffic makes human movement through the neighborhood better.
We will know the program is successful if…
Neighbors express that they feel safer, measured by a google form and signatures collected for potential renewal
barricades are hit by vehicles at a decreasing frequency, measured by 311 tickets
Fewer cars are parked illegally on the streets because people plan enough time to arrive, and park safely, measured by 311 tickets
More people use the streets to walk/bike/roll, which I’m not sure how to objectively measure
